Printer Lease Fine Print, and the Clauses That Decide

A clause missed in the fine print can leave a business locked in, or paying an unexpected fee, when something changes.

Last updated: September 2026

Most of a lease never affects you.

The clauses that decide what happens when something changes are the notice period, the early termination basis, the return condition, escalation, and any personal guarantee.

Five to find before you sign

  1. The notice period, and the date its window opens. This is the one people miss.
  2. The early termination basis, meaning how a settlement figure is calculated rather than a single number.
  3. The return condition, and what counts as fair wear and tear.
  4. Any escalation clause, which increases payments annually by a stated percentage or index.
  5. Any personal guarantee, and what releases it.

Where that line falls is set out in printer lease break fees and fair wear and tear.

Escalation, the quiet one

Some agreements increase the monthly figure each year by a fixed percentage or by an index.

A small annual increase compounds meaningfully across a 60 month term, and it rarely features in the sales conversation.

Ask directly whether the figure quoted is the figure for every month of the term.

Where there is an escalation, ask for the total across the term rather than the annual percentage, because that is the number you will actually pay.

Acting on what you find

Put the notice date in a calendar the day the agreement starts, with a reminder two weeks before.

Keep a one page note of the five clauses above, so the next person in your role does not start from scratch.

Where anything is unclear, ask for it in writing before signing rather than after something has gone wrong.

This page describes how these agreements are generally written in Australia. It is general information, not legal advice, and your own agreement governs your position.

Common questions

What should I look for in printer lease fine print?

The notice period and when its window opens, and how an early settlement figure is calculated.

Then the return condition, any annual escalation, and any personal guarantee.

What is an escalation clause on a lease?

It increases the monthly figure each year by a stated percentage or index.

Across a 60 month term a small annual increase compounds, so ask for the total across the term rather than the yearly rate.

Is the quoted monthly figure the same every month?

It is where there is no escalation clause.

Ask the question directly, because an annual increase is easy to miss in the document and rarely comes up in the sales conversation.
